California is experiencing a mild peak fire season, with year-to-date figures showing a 12 percent drop in total fires and a 53 percent reduction in acres burned compared to the five-year average. Desperate to balance its budget, the state slashed $101 million from seven major wildfire and forest resilience programs, cutting funding by 47 percent. Tom Vacar reports.
