OAKLAND, Calif. - A 51-year-old father who had recently married and whose wife is pregnant with their unborn son was gunned down last week during an Oakland home invasion robbery. He died protecting her, a detective told the family.
“He died a hero,” Chris Lieu said of his brother, Hoan “Harry” Lieu, 51, who was killed on May 22 during a home invasion at his house in the 4100 block of Carrington Street.
Now, he “won’t be able to see his baby boy come into this world, feel Benjamin’s gentle tiny hand wrapped around his finger or suffer the sleepless nights that all proud, loving fathers do,” Chris Lieu wrote on a touching GoFundMe page.
At the time of the home invasion, Harry Lieu was in another room about 9:40 p.m. and his wife, Peijuan, or “Kat,” was sitting on a couch watching television when more than one man burst in, startling and scaring her, police told the East Bay Times.
He ran outside to see what was going on as Kat witnessed him being shot in front of her, both family and police told the paper.
The robbers fled and are still being sought. Police only have vague descriptions of them and have not said whether anything was taken from the home.
According to the GoFundMe page, Harry Lieu had long enjoyed the adventurous single life, until three years ago when he told the family that he had found someone special.
“We were ecstatic to hear that,” Chris Lieu wrote. Kat, the family discovered, “is a kind and gentle person and one that can put up with his imperfections,” Chris Lieu wrote. They married in 2015. And the couple announced they were pregnant in April, and their baby boy, Benjamin, is expected to arrive in August.
Harry Lieu worked three jobs to provide for his family, the East Bay Times reported. And now, his brother is hoping to fill in the gap for his sister-in-law and future nephew.
"It (is) gut wrenching to come to the realization that Harry died, my sister-in-law is now a widow and my nephew will be born without a father," Chris Lieu wrote.
