Peaceful May Day march in Oakland, 6 arrested in Santa Rosa

OAKLAND, Calif.(KTVU/BCN) - A slew of  May Day rallies and marches took place across the Bay Area on Tuesday to mark the first day of May, otherwise known as International Workers Day.

No one was arrested or cited and no injuries, vandalism or use of force were reported during the May Day March today in Oakland, police said. 

The march was scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza at 14th Street and Broadway and marchers planned to walk to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office and the Lake Merritt Amphitheater. 

Marches also took place today in San Francisco, San Jose and Santa Rosa.

In Santa Rosa six marchers were arrested after they allegedly disrupted a City Council meeting and failed to disperse when police ordered them to. 

Police said otherwise the rally was peaceful with about 250 people marching before about 30 went to the council meeting. 

Police said two of the six taken into custody were also arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest.

This year’s events focused on the fight for worker's rights and the struggle of immigrants.  

At 10 a.m., members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union held a mutually agreed upon, work-sanctioned work stoppage at the Port of Oakland to hold a rally, instead of using that time for the group's monthly meeting.

Also on Tuesday morning, there was a prayer vigil outside the West County Detention Center in Richmond, where undocumented immigrants are held in ICE custody. Faith leaders want the Contra Costa County Sheriff's office to restore the visitation program for detained immigrants.  

And in San Francisco, there was a noon rally focused on the city's housing crisis that's driving out workers.
