CHP seeking toll plaza bridge robbers who drives Mercedes

- California Highway Patrol officials are seeking the public's help in identifying two men who robbed the toll plazas at the Carquinez Bridge and the Bay Bridge on Sunday.

At 4 a.m., the Carquinez Bridge toll plaza was robbed by two suspects as they drove in a black Mercedes S550 sedan with CarMax paper license plates and distinctive chrome accents added to the vehicle. The suspects are described as black men wearing blue and purple latex gloves, CHP officials said.

in the first instance, a man sitting in the back seat pointed a gun at the toll taker and said, "Give me the tray". The robbers fled with more than $1,000.

CHP says just before 3 p.m., suspects robbed the Bay Bridge toll plaza. The suspects and their vehicle matched the description of the suspects and vehicle in the first robbery, CHP officials said.  This time it was the driver who robbed the toll collector of about $3,000, according to police.

The toll takers were rattled, but no one was physically hurt.

The robberies were successful, even though toll plazas are monitored by cameras.

Toll collectors say getting robbed is an occupational hazard, like working as a bank teller, handling plenty of cash.

CHP officials are actively investigating both robberies. Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP at (707) 551-4100.
