First winter Spare the Air Alert issued

The Bay Area Quality Management District has issued the first Spare the Air Alert for the winter season.

The alert is issued for Monday, December 19 and bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs, or any other solid fuel for 24 hours.

According to the district, air quality is expected to be unhealthy in the region due to light winds and warmer air.

Wood smoke is a major source of pollution in the Bay Area and is harmful to children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.
