High-speed chase through San Jose airport; 2 arrested, 1 at large

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) - Two teens were arrested on multiple felony charges after leading police on a wild, high-speed freeway chase that also wound through San Jose city streets and Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport, and was captured on video. 

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Low said Anthony Zavala, 18, was arrested on Thursday morning for felony evading police, car theft, and resisting arrest. Zavala is on probation for burglary, auto theft, petty theft, and possession and sale of a controlled substance.

Inside the car, deputies found an airsoft pistol, a shaved key and a large quantity of stolen driver's licenses, passports, ID and credit cards, Low said. 

A 14-year-old girl who was in the car was cited and released to a guardian, Low said. A third suspect ran away and remains at large. 

The video of the airport chase was taken by Oscar Fernandez, an airport shuttle bus driver as the chase unfolded about midnight Wednesday.  

Low said the driver was going about 50 mph or 60 mph as police chased it through the airport. The video shows that the car didn’t slow down when it hit a speed bump at the airport, briefly going airborne and bottoming out.

"I was getting ready to take a break when I heard the sirens," Fernandez said. 

The California Highway Patrol said the chase began in the area of Tully Road and northbound Highway 101 after a car failed stop for police late Wednesday night.

It ended when  the car crashed near De Rose Way and Southwest Expressway and the driver and two passengers hopped out of the car and began jumping fences through a neighborhood, Low said.  A police dog helped capture two of the three suspects.
