Family with 4-year-old child on life support asks Gov. Newsom for jailed father to be by bedside

OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - The family of a 4-year-old boy who was shot in the head is asking Governor Gavin Newsom to allow the child’s father to be at his bedside.  The father is in prison and his son is on life support at Children’s Hospital Oakland. 

Sadly, the family says Navaun Jackson is showing no signs of brain activity. They are asking the governor to show compassion and allow the boy’s father to be here while his son fights for his life. 

The boy’s father, Nathan Jackson, has been locked up for most of his son’s life, according to Jackson’s great aunt. She said this family has been plagued by gun violence—losing many loved ones over the years. 
In 2011, Jackson’s two brothers were killed and he lost his sister last year. 

Jackson’s aunt plans to visit him in prison Saturday to give him an update on Navaun’s condition. The family is planning a press conference, where they will make a public plea to governor Gavin Newsom to allow Nathan to visit his son at Children’s Hospital Oakland. 

Navaun Jackson was at his mother’s boyfriend’s house in east Oakland on Wednesda when he was shot. 
His family says it was an accident. The boy crawled under a bed, found the loaded gun, and shot himself. 

On Friday, prosecutors charged Terrence Wilson, the mom’s boyfriend, with child abuse. criminal gun storage and being a felon in possession of a fire arm.

The 37-year-old said he had slept with the gun under the pillow and forgot to put it away.
