Shelter-in-place lifted for San Francisco's Tenderloin district
SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) -- Police on Tuesday lifted a shelter-in-place order for the Tenderloin district about an hour after the order was issued over concern about a potentially explosive device that was turned into the district's police station, authorities said.
The order was rescinded around 1:30 p.m. and police said any evacuees were permitted to return to the area after they were told to leave shortly after 12:30 p.m.
Authorities said someone tried to turn in an older explosive device at the Tenderloin police station, which is located at 301 Eddy Street, and investigators decided to issue the order while they attempted to determine if it posed a danger.
Drivers in the area were told to expect delays. San Francisco Municipal Railway officials also reported some delays on the 31-Balboa line.
Police later determined that the device could explode but turned it over to the department's bomb unit to handle. No injuries have been reported.
It was not immediately clear who turned the device in to police.
