USS Hornet celebrates 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 moon landing
The ship that recovered the Apollo 11 crew is permanently docked in Alameda, as a floating museum. While Apollo 11 landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, the crew splashed down off Samoa in the Pacific Ocean, 4-days later.
On Saturday, the USS Hornet celebrated the 50th anniversary of NASA's by bringing back some of the people who took part in the recovery effort. They included helicopter pilots, an underwater demolition team and a decontamination swimmer.
"They were a part of history - not just US history, world history," said USS Hornet Executive Director Mike McCarron,"It ranks up with Magellan and Columbus and Erik the Red. This was a seminal moment in world history."Read the full article
New theme for this year's 'BBQ 'N While Black' event at Lake Merritt
Community leaders are hosting the 2nd annual "BBQ 'N While Black" event at Lake Merritt tomorrow. On Saturday's Mornings on 2, organizers came to KTVU to discuss the big gathering.
They say they now want to distance themselves from why the party started in the first place.
Last year's party stemmed from the 'Barbecue Becky' incident, in which a woman called police to try to stop two African American men from using a charcoal barbecue at the Lake.Read the full article
Deli owner in Clayton under fire over 'send her back' Facebook post
An East Bay deli owner is facing backlash for a controversial Facebook post.
On his personal Facebook page, John Canesa of Canesa's Brooklyn Heros deli in Clayton said, "Meatballs made with beef today in case we offend any of our overly sensitive pork haters!! Free side when you say send her back! #canesasbrooklynheros."
This after President Donald Trump suggested four congresswomen of color "go back" to where they came from and a crowd at a Trump rally in North Carolina chanted "send her back" about Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.Read the full article
