35 years since deadly Oakland Hills fire
On Oct. 19, 1991, 1,500 acres burned after a small vegetation fire started in the Berkeley hills. The wildfire raged through the Oakland and Berkeley hills, fueled by winds topping 70 mph. The flames also destroyed pumping stations in the Oakland water system, making it difficult to get water to fight the fire.
