A fire destroyed five units and damaged two others of a 12-unit apartment complex in the community of Bay Point Friday afternoon, according to a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District official.

The damaging fire at the two-story apartment complex has displaced at least 26 people, 11 of which are children, Fire Inspector Ryan Bain said. The American Red Cross responded at about 4:15 p.m. to assist those who are displaced.

The county fire district initially received a report shortly before 2 p.m. about a structure fire in the 1100 block of Shoreview Court, Bain said.

Crews arrived to find that four units of the building were engulfed in flames. The blaze then spread to more units.

Firefighters had the fire contained at 2:35 p.m., Bain said.

No injuries were reported.

"It's too early to tell right now," said Robert Marshall with Contra Costa County Fire. "I've got my fire investigators in there and they're interviewing witnesses. Looking at fire patterns and seeing if they can make a determination on what exactly caused the fire."
