News Producer

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The producer gathers and selects news content, writes and copy edits stories, assembles the stories into a rundown, and creates graphics and visuals to complement the presentation of material for the on-air broadcast and digital platforms.  This includes generating story ideas, writing and/or producing packages for air.  Work closely with News Managers, Assignment Desk, news reporters and other newsroom employees on story conception and development and execution of story.  Create and write content for digital platforms that cross-promote and/or supplement station’s news gathering efforts.  Participate in editorial meetings, contributing ideas and innovative ways to present material.  Producers will also be assigned to produce or oversee special projects, productions, or live coverage of station-sponsored events.    Other duties assigned as deemed appropriate and necessary.
                              
REQUIREMENTS:  The producer must be able to write news copy clearly, in broadcast style, for on-air, online, and other digital platforms.  Must be able to assemble news material in a logical and organized fashion and present finished stories in a professional and engaging manner for viewers/readers to be able to comprehend the latest local, national and international news.  Strong writing and producing skills are essential.  Ability to contribute ideas on a daily basis and to recognize what types of stories would make for interesting and compelling television and online content.  Ability to adapt to a fast paced quickly changing environment and react in live situations to cover breaking news, etc. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with peers and supervisors and to develop contacts outside the building to aid in newsgathering.  The producer must be enterprising and self-motivated and be able to work independently to develop newscast or assigned production.  Requires a thorough understanding of all journalistic standards and broadcast production techniques used to create visual and compelling on-air and online content.

Bachelor’s Degree in journalism or related field required.  Must have experience producing TV newscasts (minimum of 2 years).  Familiarity with Bit Central, iNews and Edius a plus.  Must be able to meet aggressive deadlines while completing high quality broadcasts.  Must have thorough understanding of social media platforms and experience posting to digital platforms.

Director of Engineering

Job description: The Director of Engineering will report directly to the VP of Engineering and will assist in the planning and design of station and remote broadcast systems; assures quality control of all installations; responsible for FCC compliance on all signals, logging procedures, and transmitter maintenance logs; assists VP in capital planning and department expense budget; oversees station documentation for all electronic installations as well as building drawings.  Ensure daily maintenance issues are being resolved in a timely manner, staff development opportunities are being utilized, and projects are being completed on schedule and within budget.  Under the direction of the VP of Engineering, supervises engineering department staff.   Ensure compliance with FCC, OSHA, EPA and local regulations. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements: Candidate must have a minimum of 5 years' experience in the television industry with solid design engineering and troubleshooting skills. A degree in Engineering, Broadcast, or IT related field is preferred. Prior management skills, similar position held and/or training experience is highly desired. Strong working knowledge digital video systems, network and IT is required. Strong follow-through, record keeping, written communications, and interpersonal skills required.  Qualifications/Experience Requirements:

  • Data network, data communications, computer systems and broadcast technologies experience
  • Working knowledge of computer operating systems (Windows, Linux, Oracle, etc.) and security patching
  • Background in digital audio/video technologies at all levels of production
  • Knowledge of multi-channel station automation and servers
  • File-based newsroom workflows, editing experience and newscast automation
  • HD routing switchers, production switchers and audio matrix, cameras, robotics and multi-viewers experience
  • Satellite commercial delivery systems knowledge – Pitch Blue, Path fire, etc.
  • Understanding of ATSC 1.0 & 3.0 signals, MPEG2, MPEG4, DOLBY AC3, CALM ACT, EAS, CAP
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, manage and motivate a team

Maintenance Technician

Job description: Maintains and installs equipment at the studio and transmitter facility, provides broadcast engineering support for all news and production operations and provides assistance and training to operators.

This position will perform duties at the studio including maintenance of master control and production automation systems, ingest and playback servers, routing systems, satellite distribution, microwave systems, networking equipment, server hardware, and other various facility needs as assigned. The position will also provide timely and professional support for fast-paced news and broadcast television environment.  The ideal candidate will also have strong working knowledge of all components related to the transmission system, including electrical, cooling systems, encoders, exciters, antennas, and other related RF equipment. 

Requirements: Must have a strong background in information technology and knowledge of IP networking, computer and software maintenance. Previous experience with Grass Valley iTX automation, Ignite production automation, Vinten robotics systems, Chyron graphics systems, Evertz routers, and BitCentral news playback is a plus.   Other duties assigned as deemed appropriate and necessary. Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year  college or technical school; and at least four years related experience in TV station maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Particular emphasis will be placed on experience with software applications, operating systems and general-purpose troubleshooting in a network environment.  Membership in IBEW union required.

Account Executive 

Job Description: Maintain and improve existing client list and generate new business on our FOX stations and websites in order to generate significant revenue and achieve sales budget. Make presentations to advertising agencies and clients.  Responsible for selling sponsorships that may include promotions initiated by sales persons. Compile lists of prospective customers to use as sales leads.  This position involves local travel to call on regular and prospective clients.  Other duties assigned as deemed necessary and appropriate. 

Requirements: A Bachelors' Degree plus four years of major market experience in transactional and online advertising sales is required. Candidate must be proficient in negotiating utilizing Nielsen LPM ratings and qualitative information. Strong communication and presentation skills – both written and oral are required. Major network affiliation is preferred. Candidate must have proven success with generating and maintaining new business and experience with major sports programming sales. Prior experience with Wide Orbit and One Domain is preferred. Candidate must be detail oriented, resourceful, a team player, reliable and a self-starter. Candidate must have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Must have or be willing to obtain and drive reliable transportation and have a valid CA driver's license with a good driving record.

KTVU & KTVU Plus Internships

KTVU Channel 2 and KTVU Plus offer an unpaid college internship program three times a year: Spring, Summer and Fall.

Students are provided a chance to experience the working environment of television broadcasting including news/sports, digital/social media news production and promotion, and community affairs.Internship Requirements:College students must meet these requirements to qualify for a KTVU/KTVU Plus internship:

  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited four year college.
  • Be a junior, senior or graduate student in a graduate program.
  • Provide a letter on school letterhead, prior to the start of the internship, from an advisor or professor stating that the student is enrolled in school during the current semester/quarter and will be receiving course credit.
  • Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Due to the consequences of the coronavirus and its anticipated aftermath in the coming months, KTVU FOX 2 will NOT be offering student internships in Summer 2020.  If KTVU offers a Fall 2020 internship, we will post deadlines and the application form on this page in June.
