CONCORD, Calif. (KTVU) - An 8-year-old boy from Concord is recovering and in fair condition after a rattlesnake bit him in his friend's backyard, sending him to the hospital.
"I was just at my friend's house in their backyard, building a fort. It hurt a little bit more than a pinch when he bit me," said Brendan Singh. He was in good spirits when he spoke to KTVU Thursday night. He said he was only in a little bit of pain.
Brendan's family lives on Discovery Way near Mount Diablo State Park.
Fire officials say the boy was playing outside around 5 o’clock Wednesday when the snake bit him. They say it was a baby rattlesnake. Officials say rattlesnakes are typically more active on warmer days and to call 911 if someone is bitten.
Singh was transported to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek. Singh's mother said they're sharing their story so that others will know what to do when bitten by a snake.
He showed the spot on his ankle where the baby snake bit him, perhaps twice. Slight bruising was visible.
When asked if he saw the snake after it bit him, Brendan said he looked down and saw it.
He said the snake was about a foot long and that he ran in the house and told his friend's parents.
His mom, Debbie, credits the quick action of the friend's parents, the paramedics and the hospital for taking great care of her son.
Brendan said he'd seen a larger rattlesnake at the same friend's house just two days earlier and he warned his friend to stay away.
In school, Brendan said he'd been taught that baby rattlesnakes can be especially dangerous because they don't know how to control their venom.
Brendan's not sure when he'll be back in school but plans on telling his friends, "Dude, I got bit by a rattlesnake."
His family expects he'll be released from the hospital tomorrow.
