Fight breaks out between inmates at Maguire Correctional Facility

A fight broke out Friday at Maguire Correctional Facility in San Mateo County, involving inmates, authorities said.

A large fight broke out Friday morning at a jail in San Mateo County, involving 30 inmates, officials said.

The fight began around 10:45 a.m. at the Maguire Correctional Facility, while inmates were at recreation under deputy supervision, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies injured, inmates hospitalized

What we know:

Deputies deployed gas to stop the violence and bring the situation under control. Six deputies sustained minor injuries, the sheriff’s office said. Six inmates were hospitalized, though three have since returned to the jail. The others remain in stable condition.

"I’m grateful to the Sheriff’s Office personnel who acted swiftly to stop the fight and ensure the safety of the correctional facility and everyone inside of the facility," said Sheriff Christina Corpus. "Their actions undoubtedly prevented more serious injuries and ensured the situation was quickly under control."

Officials said the facility remained secure during the fight and there was no threat to public safety. The sheriff’s office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the melee.
