LAFAYETTE, Calif. (KTVU) – Fire crews have gained the upper hand on a fast-moving grass fire that ignited just north of Highway 24 early Tuesday morning, burning dangerously close to one home.
The 10 acre blaze started just before 4:15 a.m. near Pleasant Hill Road & Deer Hill road on the border of Lafayette & Walnut Creek.
Contra Costa County fire crews along with Cal Fire crews were called to the scene within a matter of minutes and had it contained by 6:00am.
One home threatened by the blaze was evacuated, but flames and smoke could be seen from many other homes in the area as well as from Springhill Elementary school and Acalanes High School.
Trevor Page's son was awake playing video games when he smelled smoke, saw the flames, and woke his family just as fire crews told them they needed to evacuated.
"They got things under control pretty quickly, considering it was pretty scary when they asked us to leave," said Trevor Page.
Page, told KTVU that the area has a lot of dry brush and that he wasn't surprised that it burned so quickly.
As of 6:30am fire crews were still monitoring the fire and working to get full containment.
Firefighters are warning commuters to expect traffic delays in the area.
