Lake Anza closes due to toxic algae bloom

BERKELEY, Calif. (KTVU) – Warning signs have gone up at a popular East Bay lake.

Berkeley’s Lake Anza in Tilden Park is off limits due to a toxic algae bloom.

East Bay Regional Parks closed the popular swimming hole Thursday.

The blue green algae can cause skin irritation and stomach problems for people, but it can be deadly for dogs.

Despite that, KTVU saw people jumping into the lake and dogs playing by the shore on Thursday.

At this point, there’s no word on when Lake Anza will reopen for swimmers.

The lake is just the latest Easy Bay Regional Park Lake to be closed because of algae.

Lake Temescal in Oakland, the Quarry Lakes and Shinn Pond in Fremont, and Lake Chabot in Castro Valley are all closed because of the blue green algae.

Until last year East Bay Regional Parks had never seen blooms like these.

East Bay Regional Parks says it's likely a result of the ongoing drought.
