OAKLAND, Calif. (BCN) - An Oakland City Hall security guard was identified as the victim killed in a shooting in the city's Fruitvale District early Wednesday morning, city officials said today.
Tony Smith, 66, worked in the area surrounding City Hall and was contracted through the Cypress Private Security company. He was found shot dead in a car near the corner of 35th Avenue and International Boulevard at
4:28 a.m., according to police.
Police have not disclosed a suspected motive in the shooting and have made no arrests.
"Tony was a great asset to our security team and City Family, he was instrumental in ensuring the safety of our staff and visitors to the Civic Center Complex and the Frank H. Ogawa Plaza," city officials wrote in
an email announcement distributed this morning.
