OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - An off-duty Oakland police officer was stabbed in the neck early Thursday evening in downtown Oakland, a police source said.
At 5:37 p.m., the officer had just completed their shift and was walking to their car about a block away from the police department headquarters, when they were stabbed at Sixth and Jefferson streets. According to police, the officer was not in their uniform.
"Fortunately we had officers in the area who were able to quickly transport our off-duty officer to a local hospital where they are listed in stable condition," said OPD spokesperson Officer Johnna Watson. "Where the officer sustained the injury is a key location. Fortunately it is not life-threatening."
Police said a suspect was arrested immediately and they were able to recover the weapon. The officer suffered one stab wound and was in surgery Thursday evening.
Police are not officially releasing the gender of the officer until family-next of kin are notified.
The case and suspect are being investigated. Police characterize the incident as assault with a deadly weapon.
