Police ID man fatally shot in Berkeley

BERKELEY (KTVU) -- A man who was shot and killed Thursday evening in Berkeley has been identified by police.

Ignacio Francis, 19, of Berkeley, was shot after an argument around 7:30 p.m. near Fairview and Adeline streets, about two blocks from the Ashby BART station, authorities said.

He was found by police in the 1800 block of Fairview Street. Francis died later at a hospital, according to police.

Investigators said that a group of men and women were standing at the corner of Harper and Fairview streets when a suspect approached them and fired multiple shots into the group after an argument.

"It appears that a single male approached a group of people that was standing near the corner," said Berkeley police Lt. Kevin Schofield "Some type of conversation or altercation occurred in that group, the male who approached that group, produced a handgun (and started) firing."

Both parties left the area and the suspect is still at large, police said. Rescue workers received multiple calls for help when the shooting occurred.

There have been a spate of shootings in Berkeley recently and police in the city have stepped up their presence to deter crime. Additional officers were on the streets Thursday night in an effort to address the violence.

The officers were the first officers to reach the victim, and render aid. Police said the Thursday night incident was not random although investigators were expected to see if Thursday night's shooting was connected to the other incidents.
