Police: Wrong-way driver who caused freeway crash under arrest

Antioch Police have arrested 33-year-old Ricky Barnette of Concord on suspicion he was the wrong-way driver who caused a head-on crash on Highway 4 early Friday morning.

Police say Barnette was behind the wheel of a stolen BMW in the area of East 18th Street and Cavallo Road, when officers attempted to pull him over.  He refused to stop and led officers on a vehicle pursuit which ended when Barnette drove the wrong direction onto the eastbound lanes of Highway 4 near Lone Tree Way, colliding with another car.  The passenger of the other car suffered major injuries in the crash.

Barnette and his two passengers took off running but were later spotted in the area and taken into custody by police.

Investigators say they recovered a stolen, loaded handgun in the car, along with 6.2 ounces of methamphetamine.

Barnette has been booked into the Martinez Detention Facility.  He faces several Felony charges.
