OAKLAND, Calif. - A reward in an Oakland puppy abuse case has grown to $10,000.
Early Sunday morning, two 4-month-old female German shepherd puppies—one with a missing paw and the other with a severely broken jaw—were found in a pile of garbage at the intersection of 89th Avenue and G Street in Oakland.
Just days later, on Monday afternoon, a 4-month-old German shepherd–husky mix with a shattered jaw was found in the same area.
Both dogs with broken jaws are now receiving emergency treatment, and the third puppy is in a foster home.
Police are investigating but have yet to make any arrests in connection with the cases, which may be related.
On Thursday PETA announced a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction on cruelty charges of the person or persons responsible for either of the crimes.
A $5,000 reward is also being offered by Oakland-based Pet Food Express for information that leads to the arrest of whoever is responsible for the abuse.
PETA is also asking people to help spread the word by putting up free downloadable posters in businesses and schools and on bulletin boards.
Oakland Animal Services has been caring for the puppies and is working with Oakland police to investigate the abuse.
