SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) - San Jose State University announced one suspect has been identified and arrested in a sexual battery that occurred last week at the Student Union.
On Thursday night, University President Mary Papazian released a statement saying University Police Department responded to a community tip and that the SJSU student suspect is believed to have committed additional "unreported" sexual batteries.
The University Police Department is said to be investigating a total of six sexual batteries that have been reported since October 17. In each case, the victims are students. The crimes occurred on campus at Duncan Hall, Sweeney Hall, the Student Union, and Boccardo Business Complex.
Police are not clear if other suspects are affiliated with the university, but the president's statement said they do believe a single suspect may be associated with at least two of the remaining cases.
Police have increased foot patrols as an added safety precaution as well as the addition of 24 cameras on campus and enhanced lighting, Papazian wrote.
She added: "It’s important to know what “sexual battery” means: touching intimate body parts without consent. While this may sound less severe than sexual assault, this behavior is deeply traumatizing to victims. I urge anyone who has been subjected to such conduct to contact UPD as soon as possible."
According to police, three separate sexual batteries happened on campus in the past two weeks alone. The incidents were reported on Monday, December 5, Wednesday, December 7 and Wednesday, November 30.
In Monday's assault that led to tips and an arrest, a male suspect described as an Asian in his 20s, followed a female victim into the Student Union from the 9th Street Plaza and "sexually battered" her around 4:25 p.m. Police say the victim confronted the suspect and that he walked away. He was said to be wearing a neon-green, hooded sweatshirt, a black and blue jacket and black backpack.
He was then seen riding a white skateboard with red stripes northbound on 7th Street Plaza towards San Fernando Street.
In Wednesday's assault on December 7, at approximately 1:10 p.m. a male suspect was said to have sexually battered a female victim, again on campus, in the second- floor stairwell of Duncan Hall. The suspect was last seen running up the stairs after the assault.
He is described as a male in his 20's with black "spikey" hair, wearing a dark gray hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and a navy blue backpack, according to police.
The first incident was reported on Wednesday, November 30. That incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when a male suspect sexually battered a female on the stairs of Sweeney Hall between the second and third floors. The suspect in that incident is being described as a male in his 20's with a mustache, wearing dark clothing and a black backpack.
The University Police Department is currently investigating.
