Ten-year-old bitten by shark saves friend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- A young Florida surfer wades out of the water after being attacked by a shark, but not before saving her friend.

Kaley Szarmack, 10, was catching some waves when she felt a tug on her leg. It was over in seconds.

“I just remember it bumping me and I turned around,” she said. “It was on my leg and you could see the whole tale thrashing around.”

As she waded out of the water, the pain set in, but something else did too.

Worried her six-year-old friend wouldn’t be able to get out of the water in time, this little girl made a very grown up decision. Bleeding from a gaping wound in her leg- Kaley went back into the water.

“She was much smaller than me,” said Szarmack. “And she was pretty skinny and if that shark was still going after her she would get hurt more than this.”

Home now, Kaley is enjoying a little pampering from her two brothers and younger sister.

She starts fifth grade at a new school this week and she’s already thinking about when she can get back on her board.
