SAN FRANCISCO - Thirty years ago, seven women shattered the glass ceiling and went to work where no woman had ever gone before - the San Francisco Fire Department.
On Saturday, the United Fire Service Women—a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and advocating for the welfare of women in the San Francisco Fire Department — is honoring these women who paved the way for future generations of female firefighters in San Francisco during a celebration at 111 Minna Gallery.
Today, the department boasts 275 women uniformed members in various ranks, a woman chief, Chief Joanne Hayes-White, and the largest percentage – 15.9 percent – on any force in the United States and the top five in the world, according to Charles Zukow Associates.
