UC BERKELEY (KTVU) -- Flower lovers and curious onlooker are visiting the University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley, as the so-called "Corpse Flower" is in full bloom, said UC botanists.
Experts gave the plant the nickname, because they say it smells like decaying flesh.
According to UC Botanical Garden, The plant typically requires at least 7 years before it blooms.
The plant was first discovered in Sumatra, Indonesia in 1878, and has received worldwide attention due to its massive size, fascinating appearance, and habit of producing a foul odor resembling rotten flesh. The smell attracts insects that pollinate it, said botanists.
The local plant has another nickname, Trudy. It belongs to a local collector, who loans the flower to the university, when the plant is about to bloom.
The botanical garden is staying open until 7 p.m. Sunday, to celebrate the occasion, and allow visitors time to come and soak up the experience.
