BART officials tried reassuring the public on Monday that the transit system is safe after a fatal shooting occurred aboard a train at the West Oakland Station on Saturday.

The shooting happened at about 7:46 p.m. inside a train car at the station.

“We won’t stop until we bring this individual to justice” BART chief Kenton Rainey said, addressing the public for the first time about the incident. “We are pursuing all leads that we have— be it looking at our own surveillance videos or looking at surrounding businesses' video in order to identify who this suspect is.”

BART police told KTVU the gunman is still at large and they are asking for people to come forward with information.

They said the victim is a foreign national, but that they are still waiting for an identification from the coroner's office.  A witness had said that the victim had a knife up his sleeve. Police are working to figure out if there was a relationship between the two men that could point to a motive.

On Monday, BART spokesperson Jim Allison gave KTVU this updated description of the suspect: African American male, late 20's early 30's,  6-foot-2, slim build, broad shoulders, scruffy face, bald head & wearing long green trench coat, with dark hoodie sweatshirt, dark pants  & backpack.

Allison also told KTVU that the surveillance video from the train and the platform, has not been released to the public.

According to BART police, one person who matched that description was detained and questioned, but he was later released.

We spoke to a witness who was on the platform at the time of the shooting; she told us she heard three distinct pops, and that she doesn't feel safe on BART anymore.

There was limited transbay service Saturday night due to the investigation, but BART is scheduled to open on time Sunday morning.
