Managing Editor

JOB DESCRIPTION: KTVU is searching for a Managing Editor to help oversee daily newsroom operations. A strong candidate will have a love for news and a strong commitment to the community we serve. The Managing Editor will work with other newsroom managers, reporters and producers to shape our daily editorial coverage as well as work on long-term projects and station initiatives. Seeking someone who has strong knowledge of the Bay Area and our unique, loyal news audience. The position requires a minimum of ten years professional experience and at least three years of management experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Oversees Reporter and Anchor Assignments and Schedules
  • Work to insure fairness and accuracy in all newscasts
  • Work closely with all editorial teams to make sure the newsroom is focused on digital goals
  • Work with News Director and Assistant News Director on newsroom’s editorial direction
  • Develop ideas for and execute news specials and investigations
  • Should have a strong producing background in order to assist, coach or help execute daily newscasts
  • Coach newsroom staff including EP’s, Producers, Anchors and Reporters

Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year College or university in Journalism or Communications preferred.   A minimum of 10 years of professional experience in local TV news is required for this job as well as at least 3 years of news management experience.   Line Producing experience and/or On-Air Reporting experience are all a plus. Familiarity with Bit Central, iNews and Edius a plus.  Qualified candidate will have excellent communication skills, written and oral.

Creative Services Coordinator

JOB DESCRIPTION: Responsible for managing and assigning promotion inventory for two Bay Area television stations. Schedules promotional spots on logs according to marketing strategies and station priorities. Serves as liaison between FOX network/sports, syndicators and creative services staff. Manages delivery of assets when outside media campaigns are active. Works closely with engineering and traffic departments to insure clean on-air delivery of all promotional efforts. Keeps track of station promotional items inventory.  Assists with community events outside the station, which may require working outside of normal business hours. Assists with station contest execution and social media marketing. Additional duties assigned as deemed appropriate and necessary

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year College and two to three years related experience required.

Must have excellent written and verbal skills, be highly organized and a self-starter with ability to juggle many projects at once.  Computer experience with Microsoft Office, Word and Excel required. Experience with Wide Orbit strongly preferred.

News Producer (two positions)

JOB DESCRIPTION: The producer gathers and selects news content, writes and copy edits stories, assembles the stories into a rundown, and creates graphics and visuals to complement the presentation of material for the on-air broadcast and digital platforms.  This includes generating story ideas, writing and/or producing packages for air.  Work closely with News Managers, Assignment Desk, news reporters and other newsroom employees on story conception and development and execution of story.  Create and write content for digital platforms that cross-promote and/or supplement station’s news gathering efforts.  Participate in editorial meetings, contributing ideas and innovative ways to present material.  Producers will also be assigned to produce or oversee special projects, productions, or live coverage of station-sponsored events.    Other duties assigned as deemed appropriate and necessary.

The producer must be able to write news copy clearly, in broadcast style, for on-air, online, and other digital platforms.  Must be able to assemble news material in a logical and organized fashion and present finished stories in a professional and engaging manner for viewers/readers to be able to comprehend the latest local, national and international news.  Strong writing and producing skills are essential.  Ability to contribute ideas on a daily basis and to recognize what types of stories would make for interesting and compelling television and online content.  Ability to adapt to a fast paced quickly changing environment and react in live situations to cover breaking news, etc.  Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with peers and supervisors and to develop contacts outside the building to aid in newsgathering.  The producer must be enterprising and self-motivated and be able to work independently to develop newscast or assigned production.  Requires a thorough understanding of all journalistic standards and broadcast production techniques used to create visual and compelling on-air and online content.

Bachelor’s Degree in journalism or related field required.  Must have experience producing TV newscasts (minimum of 2 years).  Familiarity with Bit Central, iNews and Edius a plus.  Must be able to meet aggressive deadlines while completing high quality broadcasts.  Must have thorough understanding of social media platforms and experience posting to digital platforms.

Graphic Designer

JOB DESCRIPTION: KTVU / KTVU Plus are seeking candidates for a full-time Graphic Designer to create and design for on-air, print, digital and social in the areas of news, promotion, local programming, commercial spots, sports and digital platforms.  Duties include:  Produce designs and graphics for merchandising material, posters, banners, flyers, brochures and other station branding needs. Produces still and animated graphic materials for on-air and taped portions of television news broadcasts. Assists digital team with daily graphics production. Must be able to work under tight deadlines and pressure in a collaborative team environment.  Other duties assigned as deemed appropriate and necessary. 

College or Design/Art school training with an accent in commercial, graphic or animated area of design. Prior experience in local media production strongly preferred. Expert knowledge and high skill level working with Adobe Creative Cloud.

Maintenance Technician

JOB DESCRIPTION: Working closely with News Operations Manager this position is primarily responsible for news vehicle fleet maintenance and repair. As such, will act as primary contact with repair shops and vehicle dealerships. Drive company vehicles back and forth to dealerships and repair shops for routine maintenance and repair. Track Department of Motor Vehicles registration for all fleet vehicles. Assist News Photographers with their needs as it relates to the vehicles and equipment. Act as liaison between the station and our helicopter company. Maintain proficiency with Live Vehicle Safe Operations training and conduct training for new hires and refresher courses for staff as needed.  Must have valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.

Notify the assignment desk and any other necessary personnel when there are problems with equipment. Attend and participate in department meetings, safety meetings and training. Install, set up, adjust, assemble, control, test and operate station broadcast equipment to meet news and engineering department requirements. Other duties may be assigned as deemed appropriate and necessary.

Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year  college or technical school; and at least four years related experience in TV station maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Particular emphasis will be placed on experience withsoftware applications, operating systems and general-purpose troubleshooting in a network environment.

News Photographer

JOB DESCRIPTION: KTVU is seeking a News ENG Photographer to clearly and creatively record news events and perform ENG operations so the story may be effectively conveyed to the viewers in a complete, factual, timely and professional manner. Must have a professional level of skill in lighting and audio operations in the field.

Operate, service, and maintain in proper working order electronic equipment provided for the execution of assignments.  Must be familiar with ENG technology and microwave transmission in order to carry out live shots.  Must conduct wide range of ENG operations with a clear understanding of safety procedures.

Must be able to edit in the field under pressure and be familiar with non-linear editing.  Seek out and shoot live action, breaking news stories, monitor 2-way radio from newsroom and monitor police scanners for information on news stories.  Drive reporters to the scene of live, breaking news stories and to locations to shoot stories for later use on News programs.  Carry out the instructions of the Assignment Desk and Newsroom Managers.  May occasionally be required to photograph scenes from an airplane or helicopter or fly to an assignment in such an aircraft.   Assignments may include out of market and overnight travel.  Other duties assigned as deemed appropriate and necessary. 

Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of three years of professional News Camera experience is required or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Candidates must have an excellent driving record.   A professional level of skill in operation of ENG live trucks, ENG field cameras and field editing systems, including non-linear and associated photographic equipment is required.

Manager National Sales

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Vice President of Sales, co-directs the National Sales Department for KTVU and KTVU Plus. This involves continuing communication with Fox Stations Sales account executives, agencies and clients; assisting with sales efforts; managing inventory and pricing; providing direction and support to FSS and the local sales team; demonstrating leadership to the department and fellow managers – all designed to achieve and exceed station goals and objectives.  Achieve advertising revenue goals and objectives by managing sports, special sales, internet and new business sales.  Manage inventory and rates to maximize station revenue.  Provide guidance to FSS and the local sales team to make effective rating and program analysis presentations.  Clearly define FSS performance expectations.  Involves travel to FSS markets, going out on calls, entertaining key clients.  Other duties assigned as deemed appropriate and necessary.

Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from four-year College or university and a minimum of five years related experience in National Sales or sales representative position is required. 

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in partnership with FSS management in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures.  Must be very knowledgeable in the basic and advanced techniques of selling television and in sales negotiation.  Must have strong organizational skills, and demand high standards of self and others.  Deadlines must be established, and achieved.  Must have strong ability to proactively build relationships with clients at all levels.  Considerable amount of time spent traveling to sales rep offices around the country.   Experience with Wide Orbit Traffic system a definite plus.

Administrative Assistant

JOB DESCRIPTION: Primarily, candidate will provide administrative support to the KTVU Fox 2 and KTVU Plus General Manager.  Duties will also include assisting VP of Finance, VP of News and Human Resources Manager.  These duties include but are not limited to station travel arrangements, office supply orders, review of expense reports and coordination of all incoming packages.   In addition, candidate will provide administrative support to Sales management staff and Account Executives.   Duties include writing and checking orders, proposals, maintaining organizational systems, general office requirements, and assisting with special projects.  Investigate order discrepancies and credit memos.  Back up other sales assistants as necessary.   Participate in and help with sales coordinated events.  Answer phones in a professional and courteous manner. Other duties may be assigned as deemed appropriate and necessary.

Strong written/oral communication skills are required.   Strong PC skills and proficiency w/ Microsoft Office is also required.   This position requires excellent attention to detail, and accuracy.  Must be able to interact professionally with a variety of people and work efficiently and courteously w/ station personnel.   Must be personable and demonstrate initiative.  Two years of experience in an administrative position is required.  Media experience preferred.  High school diploma or GED is required.  College degree preferred.  Experience with Box and Quip helpful.

Senior Film/Tape Editor 

JOB DESCRIPTION: Performs non-linear editing for creative services, sales, news, sports and other programs as needed utilizing the Adobe Creative Cloud collection of software. Duties include tagging promotional spots, editing news billboards, editing client commercials and sales presentations as well as newscast content and segments/packages for other special productions including long form content. Editor will create compelling, understandable and accurate visual stories and will work closely with producers, writers, videographers and Creative Services supervisors to fulfil the goals and expectations of each project. The editor is expected to exercise excellent professional judgment based on current broadcast industry video and audio quality and editing standards. The ideal candidate will be expected to follow station policies regarding journalistic standards, quality and appropriateness, and alert managers when questions arise regarding any of these concerns. This is a union position; membership in IBEW is required.  Must be proficient in non-linear editing and have a solid understanding of production techniques. Must demonstrate acute attention to detail and the ability to multi task and deliver quality product on very short deadlines.  Additional duties assigned as deemed appropriate or necessary.

Bachelor's degree (B.A) preferred or equivalent related experience working in a mid-to-major size television market.  Must have experience with non-linear editing preferably Adobe Premiere and associated software.  Familiarity with Bit Central and iNews a plus.   Must be able to meet aggressive deadlines while completing high quality edits.

Account Executive 

Job Description: Maintain and improve existing client list and generate new business on our FOX stations and websites in order to generate significant revenue and achieve sales budget. Make presentations to advertising agencies and clients.  Responsible for selling sponsorships that may include promotions initiated by sales persons. Compile lists of prospective customers to use as sales leads.  This position involves local travel to call on regular and prospective clients.  Other duties assigned as deemed necessary and appropriate. 

Requirements: A Bachelors' Degree plus four years of major market experience in transactional and online advertising sales is required. Candidate must be proficient in negotiating utilizing Nielsen LPM ratings and qualitative information. Strong communication and presentation skills – both written and oral are required. Major network affiliation is preferred. Candidate must have proven success with generating and maintaining new business and experience with major sports programming sales. Prior experience with Wide Orbit and One Domain is preferred. Candidate must be detail oriented, resourceful, a team player, reliable and a self-starter. Candidate must have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office. Must have or be willing to obtain and drive reliable transportation and have a valid CA driver's license with a good driving record.

KTVU Channel 2 and KTVU Plus offer an unpaid college internship program three times a year: Spring, Summer and Fall.

Students are provided a chance to experience the working environment of television broadcasting including news/sports, digital/social media news production and promotion, and community affairs.Internship Requirements:College students must meet these requirements to qualify for a KTVU/KTVU Plus internship:

  • Be currently enrolled in an accredited four year college.
  • Be a junior, senior or graduate student in a graduate program.
  • Provide a letter on school letterhead, prior to the start of the internship, from an advisor or professor stating that the student is enrolled in school during the current semester/quarter and will be receiving course credit.
  • Have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
