The family of the San Francisco man stabbed and killed while holding his young sons hand speaks out about their loss

Family members describe the man stabbed and killed while holding his 8-year-old sons hand in San Francisco was described as being a great dad, "he was the absolute definition of a dad. He cared the world for his baby." The mother of the victims son says their child described the ordeal of witnessing the attack on his father. The family wants justice, saying that the suspect has caused them a lifetime of pain. Now, the childs mother says their son is in therapy.

A GoFundMe has been established seeking donations to support the family of Robert Byrd, who was fatally stabbed while walking with his son while picking him up from a San Francisco elementary school.

The Commodore Sloat Elementary School Parents’ Club Organization established the campaign on Saturday in order to help Byrd’s family cover funeral costs and to provide financial support.

Byrd, 35, was stabbed to death in the crosswalk outside the school on Sept. 10 with his 8-year-old son, after getting into an argument that escalated into a physical fight with a suspect who was later identified as 42-year-old Daniel Patrick Rodriguez.

Police have not given a motive for the stabbing, other than a general altercation, and have not described whether Byrd had any type of relationship with Rodriguez.

Father fatally stabbed while walking with son near school

A father was stabbed to death outside Commodore Sloat Elementary Police, and a suspect was arrested within 48 hours.

What happened

At a news conference, Interim San Francisco Police Chief Paul Yep said Rodriguez was arrested on Friday in Tuolomne County. 

Yep said that more than 60 officers worked on the case and used technology like Automated Licence Plate Readers and drones to identify Rodriguez and find him.

District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said her office is already looking at the case and her prosecutors will make a charging decision in the days following the arrest.
