Shooting reported on eastbound lanes

What we know:

Carlos Ray Thomas, 57, of Oakland was arrested by CHP officers after crashing on I-680 in Contra Costa County following the shooting, officials said.

Officers said they received a call around 3:45 p.m. about a shooting on eastbound Highway 24, west of Old Tunnel Road. No injuries were reported.

At one point, CHP officials said it appeared that two vehicles were shooting at each other on the highway.

In a subsequent update, CHP said their officers were told that a victim's vehicle was struck by gunfire from a passing vehicle. The victim was not hurt and stopped near the scene, CHP said.

Another victim contacted CHP when they arrived home to say their vehicle had also been struck by gunfire.

Witnesses contact CHP

CHP said multiple witnesses contacted them about the shooting and provided a description of the suspect's vehicle. The suspect continued into Contra Costa County where he crashed his vehicle into the center divide of southbound I-680 near Olympic Boulevard in Walnut Creek at 4:08 p.m.

After Thomas allegedly tried to flee on foot, CHP took him into custody without incident. Authorities recovered the firearm used in the shooting.

CHP said Thomas was booked into Santa Rita Jail Thursday night on multiple felony charges, including attempted murder and shooting from a vehicle.

Investigation shuts down highway

All eastbound lanes of the highway were shut down during the investigation, but reopened shortly after 7 p.m.
