A person and a dog were shot by police in San Francisco’s Union Square on Sunday afternoon, shutting down a portion of busy Market Street as authorities investigated the scene.

San Francisco Police Department officers were flagged down just before 4:30 p.m. in the area of O’Farrell and Market streets by a person who said they had been bitten by a "large off leashed dog" that was still in the area and showing aggression, according to a department statement.

Officers found the dog and his owner in the area, but when they tried to detain him and secure the animal, "an officer-involved shooting occurred."

"The large off leashed dog fled from the area and then returned to the scene and bit one of the responding officers," the SFPD said.

The San Francisco Fire Department told KTVU that units were sent to the scene and found the man shot in the leg. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and listed in stable condition.

A German Shepherd mix was also found with a gunshot wound to its right front leg, and it was taken by San Francisco Animal Care & Control for treatment. The dog was also reported to be in stable condition.

The officer who was bitten was treated at the scene and was not taken to a hospital, while the initial dog bite victim took themselves to a hospital for treatment.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and the SFPD said it will hold a town hall within 10 days – per department protocol – to release details on the investigation.
