SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KTVU) - Three San Francisco judges ruled on Friday that warrants used to carry out a police raid on a freelance journalist's home were improper and should be unsealed.
The warrants were issued for journalist Bryan Carmody's home, phone, and office.
Police were trying to uncover how Carmody obtained a police report detailing the circumstances surrounding the death of public defender Jeff Adachi last February.
Court documents revealed that investigators did not tell the judge who signed off on the warrant, that Carmody was a journalist with a police-issued press pass.
Under California law, journalists are protected from having to disclose their sources to people.
