A man was struck and killed by a Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit train Friday morning in Petaluma, the agency confirmed.

Incident details

What we know:

The collision happened around 9:53 a.m. near the Cinnabar Bridge. The SMART train was traveling southbound from Windsor to Larkspur at the time.

Authorities said the victim was a pedestrian who was in an area along the train tracks described as an open field, with no active roadway nearby.

Officials have not said why the person was in the area.

Passengers uninjured

There were 57 passengers and two crew members on board the train. None of them were injured, according to SMART.
