CHP shuts down major East Bay roadway due to fog and multiple crashes on Friday, including one that injured a fire captain.

The CHP closed down busy Vasco Road in both directions for more than an hour on Friday due to fog and multiple crashes including one that injured a fire captain with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

Several crashes and thick fog were reported Friday afternoon along a major thoroughfare through the Diablo Range, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities said multiple collisions occurred along fog-covered Vasco Road, including one that left a firefighter injured.

According to the Contra Costa Fire Protection District, firefighters were responding to a fog-related crash around 1:20 p.m.

ConFire Capt. George Lang told KTVU that another captain was at the scene directing traffic when a car approached him "at a rapid rate of speed."

"He was able to leap mostly out of the way, but he sustained injuries to his lower extremities," Lang said.

 The firefighter was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Explosion near Hayward rocks neighborhood, leaves 6 injured

An explosion and fire erupted in a Hayward residential area on Thursday, destroying homes, shutting down a freeway and injuring six people after a construction crew struck an underground gas line, according to firefighters, witnesses and PG&E.

Authorities said at least six cars were involved in the series of crashes.

They have not said whether there were any additional injuries.

Northbound and southbound Vasco Road were closed on the Livermore and Brentwood sides, but later reopened around 4 p.m.
