3 men killed in overnight car crash in West Marin County identified

MARIN COUNTY (KTVU) - Three men who died in a crash on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard southeast of Point Reyes Station in west Marin County early this morning, have been identified.

Coroners have identified the driver as Chance Pierre Maurer, 18, of Novato.

The passengers were brothers Chancellor Grier Argall, 20, of Woodacre and Lancelot Mattaeus Argall, 18, of San Anselmo.

All three victims had attended Drake High School at one point. The school district released a statement saying, "Our deepest condolences to any that may have known or whose lives have been touched by the students.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family."

The 2013 Toyota Corolla was heading west on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard east of Platform Bridge Road west of Samuel P. Taylor State Park around 12:15 a.m., CHP Officer Andrew Barclay said.

The Toyota crossed the eastbound traffic lane and went off the road where it struck a power pole and two trees at a high rate of speed, Barclay said.

A passerby who came upon the crash called 911. The CHP, Marin County Sheriff's Office and Marin County Fire Department responded, Barclay said.

The three men were declared dead at the scene. 

Sir Francis Drake Boulevard was closed until about 6 a.m., and PG&E responded to repair the power pole support beam that was destroyed in the crash, Barclay said.

The CHP says the men were wearing seatbelts. The CHP adds there are not streetlights along that section of roadway. Wildlife is frequently found in the area where the crash occurred, but there is no evidence of a collision with an animal.  Officials say speed may have been a factor. 

Investigators do not know if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, Barclay said.
