PG&E Saratoga substation fire knocks out power

- A fire broke out Wednesday morning at a PG&E substation in Saratoga, affecting 21,000 customers, the utility announced.

A fire broke out Wednesday morning at a Pacific Gas & Electric substation in Saratoga, briefly cutting power to about 21,000 customers, the utility said.

Fire contained

What we know:

PG&E reported the fire at 8:25 a.m. It was self-extinguished just before noon.

Traffic signals were out in several neighborhoods in South San Jose, Campbell, and Saratoga because of the outage at the substation.

Most customers had power restored in the first hour, and the rest had power back on by noon, according to PG&E.

Utility officials said the Saratoga substation experienced equipment failure, but they are not sure what caused the fire.

Similar event in San Francisco

Dig deeper:

The substation fire and outage came just days after a similar incident in San Francisco, where nearly a third of the city, about 130,000 customers, experienced a power outage that lasted several days.

The utility is investigating the cause of both the Saratoga and San Francisco fires.
