Holiday tradition returns to Union Square

SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - A popular holiday tradition returned to San Francisco Wednesday as the Union Square Ice Rink held its 8th annual opening ceremony to the delight of skaters.

Robert Keith, an event spokesman from Willy Bietak Productions, said the location holds many family-friendly activities, but also some key events like; ‘Drag Queens on Ice’— described as “fierce” and full of lipstick, a “night mixer” called ‘Single In The City’, and the ‘Polar Bear Skate’, where skaters of all ages are encouraged to wear their bathing suits on New Year’s Day and to “take the plunge” on ice.

Snoopy was on hand to help celebrate and promote his upcoming film— The Peanuts Movie, along with the YBCA skating team.

Willy Bietak Productions has similar temporary ice skating rinks in major U.S. cities as well as Hong Kong.
The Union Square skating rink will be open until January 18th. Officials say it’s best to buy your tickets online.  Admission is $11 for adults and $7 for children eight and under. Skate rental is $6.
