San Jose police lob chemical irritants during standoff

San Jose police on Thursday morning were negotiating with a barricaded person in the Hyde Park neighborhood, evacuating homes nearby. At some point in the morning, they launched a chemical irritant and flash-bang grenades.

San Jose police on Thursday morning took a man who had barricaded himself inside a home in the Hyde Park neighborhood into custody.

Police also said that he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound, which might be life-threatening.

Before they took him into custody at about 8:30 a.m., police launched a chemical irritant and flash-bang grenades.

The standoff comes nearly 11 hours after a shooting near North Fourth and East Hedding streets.

In that 8 p.m. Wednesday shooting, one man was pronounced dead and police are not saying if they know what led up to that shooting. He was the city's 12th homicide this year.

It's unclear if the two events are related.
