Stanislav Petrov case: 2 Alameda deputies accused in man's beating no longer with department
OAKLAND (KTVU) -- Two Alameda County sheriff's deputies who were caught on camera beating a man in San Francisco last year are no longer with the department, authorities said Friday.
Deputies Paul Wieber and Luis Santamaria have left the agency, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly told KTVU although he declined to say why they left because of pending litigation. '
The SF Gate posted a story saying the two had been fired. The Gate spoke to Michael Rain, an attorney for Santamaria, who said the deputies were terminated for their role in the Nov. 12, 2015 beating of Stanislav Petrov, who was 29 years old at the time of the incident.
The incident began with a high-speed chase by Alameda deputies of Petrov that crossed the Bay Bride and ended in a San Francisco alley. The deputies tackled Petrov at the corner of Clinton Park and Stevenson Street after the chase from the Castro Valley.
The beating was captured on video and the footage went viral after it was posted online.
Petrov suffered multiple injuries from the beating, including a crushed hand and finger fractures, blunt force injuries, head trauma and cuts and bruises.
A gold chain that Petrov had been wearing was allegedly given to a homeless couple by a deputy to prevent them from telling authorities about what they had witnessed.
In May, the San Francisco district attorney filed charges against Wieber and Santamaria that include assault with a deadly weapon and battery. The two have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Petrov has filed a federal complaint against the county, the sheriff and the deputies. That case is pending.
