Truck driver in fair condition after collision with SMART train in Santa Rosa
SANTA ROSA, Calif. (BCN) - The male driver of a box truck that collided with a SMART train Thursday afternoon is in fair condition at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital today a hospital spokeswoman said.
Detlev Ihfled, 68, suffered moderate injuries in the 3 p.m. collision at the train crossing on Todd Road near Moorland Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The gates at the crossing were down and the train drove through them, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said.
The cab of the truck was not struck but the train hit the box end of it causing the truck to spin and overturn, Sloat said. There was severe damage to the front of the SMART train, Sloat said.
None of the 47 passengers on the train were injured, the CHP said.
The train was traveling about 50 mph at the time and continued traveling some distance after the collision, according to the CHP.
SMART spokeswoman Jeanne Mariani-Belding said a bus bridge took train passengers between the downtown Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park train stations to bypass the collision site Thursday afternoon.
