A woman was fatally struck by a car while crossing a busy intersection in San Mateo Friday morning.

Authorities are investigating a fatal crash after a woman was hit by a car Friday morning while crossing a busy intersection in San Mateo.

San Mateo police say the crash occurred around 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of 17th Avenue and El Camino Real.

Victim dies at hospital

Police said the woman was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

A deadly Tuesday afternoon crash on the San Mateo Bridge has been attributed by the California Highway Patrol to distracted driving, in a tragic situation that killed a 54-year-old mother who had fled Venezuela for a better life in the Bay Area.

San Mateo Police Officer Andrew Peek said the driver who struck the woman stopped after the crash.

"The parties that were involved all remained on scene, and they’re cooperating with the investigation," Peek said.

Authorities have not released information about the driver or the vehicle involved. Police also have not said whether drugs, alcohol, or distracted driving were factors in the collision.

The department’s traffic unit is conducting the investigation.

"We have a city that does not take street safety seriously. Instead of investing in infrastructure, we’ve actually seen proposals from the city to remove infrastructure," he said.
