Driver in Oakland hits Prius carrying family, checks on them and takes off: witness

Oakland police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who slammed his SUV into a Prius carrying a family, including a 5-year-old girl, before witnesses said he checked on the family to make sure they were OK and then took off running.

The collision happened on Sunday in West Oakland at the intersection of Adeline and 7th streets.
One witness said the SUV driver obviously knew what he had done.

“He stopped briefly,” a woman who asked not to be identified told KTVU.”He retrieved something from that vehicle and took off and ran and he knew someone was hurt. "

He stopped to make sure the family was OK, and told her to call 911 because he saw there was a little girl in the backseat, the woman said. He grabbed something that looked like a wallet and took off running, she said.

The woman in the Prius and the girl were taken to the hospital with cuts and bruises. The male driver suffered cuts to his legs.

KTVU's Rob Malcolm contributed to this report.
