Fireball over 3 western states is identified

Thousands of people reported seeing a white ball of light flying over California, Nevada and Arizona.

Military officials say it was the booster from a Russian rocket that was launched Tuesday.

It broke apart as it passed through the atmosphere.

It attracted a lot of attention on social media, with people saying it was everything from a shooting star to a falling satellite.
