Golden State Warriors help stuff 20,000 lunch bags for the needy

OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - The Golden State Warriors volunteered their time and artistic talents on Monday for the ‘Hashtag Brown Bag Initiative’. Star players like Steph Curry decorated lunch bags to hand out over the holiday at the Oakland Marriott hotel ballroom.

"I am a terrible artist," Curry said. "But I did my best snowman rendition here."

He drew a snowman palming a basketball. Marreese Speights was so into his project, he said he Googled "holiday decorations" before getting started "I got a couple of them to draw," Speights said.

Season ticket holders were invited to help the volunteer effort. The Warriors were hoping to bag 20,000 lunches to be divided between Bay Area food banks.

"This will get people motivated to donate during the holiday season," said Susan Walkup Bateson, Executive Director of the Alameda County Community Food Bank. "And we really need their help."

Children of ticket holders got to work alongside their basketball heroes, decorating and stuffing lunch bags for people in need.

"To be able to do this with these kids, they get to understand how blessed we are and the impact you can have," Curry said. "So it's pretty special."

The efforts were part of the ‘NBA Cares Season of Giving’ league-wide campaign.

"They see us a lot on TV, but it's good to show them we're regular guys," Warriors forward Jason Thompson said. "We used to be like them when we were young."

The brown-bag lunches will be distributed in Marin, San Francisco, and Alameda Counties this week.
