Human remains found in freezer believed to be missing family member, police say

JUNEAU, Alaska - Human remains discovered inside a chest freezer at a Alaska home are believed to belong to an adult male family member, according to the Juneau Police Department.

Officers responded Sunday night to a residence in the 6500 block of Glacier Highway after receiving a report of possible human remains found on the property.

Police said the reporting party had been cleaning out the residence following the death of a family member when they discovered what appeared to be human remains inside a chest freezer in a locked outbuilding.

Responding officers confirmed the presence of deceased human remains. Investigators have made a preliminary identification and believe the remains may be those of an adult male family member. The individual's next of kin has been notified, but positive identification is pending confirmation by the Alaska State Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities said it is unknown how long the remains had been in the freezer.

 Investigators also determined that no missing person's report involving the deceased had ever been filed with the Juneau Police Department.

The remains have been transported to the State Medical Examiner's Office, where an autopsy will be conducted to confirm the person's identity and determine the cause and manner of death.
