Man dies after trying to rescue dog at Ocean Beach
A man is dead after he was pulled from the water at Ocean Beach by two women.
SAN FRANCISCO - A man is dead after he was pulled from the water at Ocean Beach by two women.
Sukai Curtis-Contreras, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Fire Department, said they received the call just after 2 p.m. on Thursday that a man was rescued from the water near Lawton Street.
She said the man went into the water fully clothed after a dog, and suddenly collapsed at the surfline. Two women reportedly pulled him out of the water and called 911.
Crews from National Park Service Ocean Rescue and SFFD arrived within a couple of minutes, according to Curtis-Contreras, and started CPR.
A video by a witness shows the first responders trying to save the man's life while two dogs surround the scene. In the video, the man is put on a gurney and transported to the hospital.
Curtis-Contreras said the man succumbed to his injuries.
SFFD confirms the dog survived, but is not able to identify the victim.
Curtis-Contreras warns beachgoers that Ocean Beach has unique hazards like rip currents and sneaker waves, no matter the conditions, and even adults in ankle-deep water can be pulled in. SFFD does not recommend going into the water unless there is a lifeguard.
"Call 911, don’t go in the water after a dog, don’t go in the water after a person, call 911," she said.
The women credited for pulling the man out of the water were not identified.
