Protesters clash with SFPD at Mission Police Station

OAKLAND/ SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - Protesters in San Francisco clashed with police in the city's Mission District Friday night. Things quickly became violent when a group marched in the Mission and headed to Mission Police Station around 9 p.m.

A KTVU camera crew was at the scene where marchers could be heard saying expletives against "Channel 2" and against "mainstream media". 

A female protester was seen on the ground being secured by police during a clash where protesters used signs to swing against police and police moved in, swinging batons and started to make arrests. It is not clear how many arrests were made. According to Mission Local, the San Francisco Mission nighttime march that briefly became violent was for the teachers movement in Oaxaca, Mexico. 

Earlier in the evening, protesters in Oakland attempted to get on the I-980 onramp at Brush Street in the downtown area. KTVU's Amber Lee was there and reported the protesters were met by California Highway Patrol who blocked them from getting on the freeway, but said that there was no violent confrontation. 

The earlier Oakland and daytime San Francisco protests were part of what was called Anonymous' National Day of Action and included many who stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. The same group of more than 100 Oakland protesters were met by CHP when they attempted to enter I-880 near Oakland Police headquarters at the beginning of the march. 

About 50 demonstrators in San Francisco gathered around 4 p.m. for the same cause, but that crowd was said to have quickly dispersed.

Oakland Police Department said on Twitter shortly before 5 p.m. that about 50 protesters were seen marching through the downtown area and that traffic may be impacted.  Reporter Amber Lee said that number had quickly doubled.

The Oakland march began after an announced rally was set to gather at Frank Ogawa Plaza, which many activists refer to as Oscar Grant Plaza since the rise of the Occupy movement.

The protests were scheduled to go until 11 p.m. in both cities.

37 U.S. cities are holding simultaneous protests as part of this movement.
