Redwood City Police shot and killed a man in a residential neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon. They've identified the man as 48-year-old Jose Reynaldo Lombera of Redwood City. Police say officers were responding to a report that a man had fired a gun into the sidewalk. The San Mateo County District Attorneys Office is jointly investigating this incident with the Coroners Office and the Redwood City Police Department.
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - An armed suspect was shot and killed by police officers in Redwood City, officials say.
Initial details were scarce, but in an update, the Redwood City Police Department said they had received a call at around 2:30 p.m. about a man who had discharged a gun on the sidewalk before he fled the area of the 200 block of Hazel Avenue.
Police said officers responded to the area to establish a perimeter and used drone technology to locate the suspect.
Police said they made contact with the suspect. When the suspect allegedly pointed a gun at officers when they attempted to communicate with him, the officers used both lethal and less-than lethal weapons against him.
Earlier, the San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaff confirmed to KTVU that one person was shot and taken to a nearby hospital.
In the police update, they said after the suspect was shot, he was immediately provided medical aid at the scene before being taken to a hospital where he later died.
The suspect was identified as 48-year-old Redwood City resident Jose Reynaldo Lombera.
No other injuries were reported. Police said the officers involved in the fatal shooting have been placed on administrative leave as is standard protocol.
Police called the incident an active investigation. The San Mateo County District Attorney's Office and the San Mateo County coroner's office are involved in the investigation.

Aerial video showed heavy police presence around 4:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Hemlock Avenue in Redwood City.
Nearby Linden Street and Madrone Street were affected by road closures due to the police activity.
Authorities asked that residents stay away from the area, but said there is no "active threat" to the public.
Neighbors said the standoff lasted about one hour. One neighbor said she heard six gunshots. Some said Lombera is a longtime resident in the area, but may have had mental health issues.
