Fire at Original Joe's in SF's North Beach quickly contained, officials say

Firefighters respond to a structure fire in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood.

Firefighters quickly contained a one-alarm fire at the Original Joe's restaurant in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood Wednesday evening.

What we know:

The San Francisco Fire Department responded to the intersection of Union Street, between Stockton Street and Columbus Avenue.

Officials said the fire was contained to one building at 8:19 p.m.

In an update, the fire department said there were no injuries or displacements as of 9:11 p.m. associated with this fire and that the building would be turned over to its owners.

Samuel Menchaca, a spokesperson for the fire department, said the department received a call of smoke on the building. He said upon arriving, firefighters did see heavy smoke coming from the roof of the building.

"They found a fire in one of the flues, almost in the cooking area behind me here at Original Joe's," Menchaca said.

Images and video posted to social media show a large fire department presence with the fire truck's ladder extended as people take video of the incident behind yellow police tape.

Original Joe's, a popular North Beach eatery, is seen in the foreground. It is not clear if the restaurant was damaged by the fire.

Menchaca said the restaurant and the residential building next to it were evacuated as a precautionary measure during this incident. He said the fire was put out in approximately 10 minutes.

While the fire is under investigation, Menchaca speculated the origin of the fire was linked to the restaurant's kitchen.

Why you should care:

Officials are asking people to avoid the area while firefighters continue to work at the scene. The fire department was expected to clear out from the area sometime after 9 p.m.
