The checkout experience for Walmart shoppers is about to get a little easier.

Customers have long questioned why the retail giant did not accept tap-to-pay options such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Now, that's about to change.

Walmart announced that beginning Monday, shoppers at select locations will have more ways to pay at checkout as the company begins rolling out contactless payments.

That means customers won't necessarily have to rummage through their bags or wallets for a physical card. Instead, they can use their smartphone or smartwatch at checkout.

Walmart said it received nearly $2.9 billion in tariff refunds and plans to use some of it to support lower prices for shoppers, while the refunds also provided a significant boost to quarterly operating income.

 "We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them," the company said in its announcement. "Whether picking up groceries, gifts or everyday essentials, they can check out using eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch."

The new contactless payment options include Apple Pay and Google Pay, allowing customers to pay using digital wallets on compatible smartphones and smartwatches.

Shoppers will also be able to use eligible contactless credit and debit cards.

Walmart is initially rolling out tap-to-pay technology at select Walmart and Sam's Club locations.

The company plans to expand the payment option to all of its U.S. stores by the end of 2026.
