Windsurfer rescued off Alcatraz Island

Civil War-era tunnels have been found under Alcatraz prison.

A wind surfer in distress Tuesday evening off Alcatraz Island has been rescued.

San Francisco firefighters and U.S. Coast Guard responded to the incident and said one of two kite surfers required aid, was evaluated and did not need hospitalization.

The rescue began just before 8 p.m. and was completed just minutes after the hour.

Coast Guard Lt. Emily Rowan said the kite surfer was returned safely to St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco.

Rowan pointed out that the kite surfer was wearing a life jacket.

"That definitely helps in situations like this," she said.
